Entrepreneur, impresario, entertainer, activist. Opera singer Tiriki Onus thought he knew every aspect of his charismatic grandfather Bill – until an unearthed 70-year-old silent film reel suggested William ‘Bill’ Onus might have been the first-ever Aboriginal filmmaker. Ablaze is the compelling tale of a campaign for equality brilliantly orchestrated through performance, entertainment, film and sheer audacity. Using rare archival footage and state-of-the-art animation, this documentary traces the yet untold story of how Bill and a handful of passionate activists stood against government racial policies intent on destroying First Nations languages, cultures and communities. Join this special screening of Ablaze, including an exclusive Q&A with the director and University of Melbourne Senior Lecturer, Tiriki Onus.
