This online café focuses on accent biases, where they come from and how they can be acknowledged and avoided. The café includes an interactive accent bias experiment, a lightning talk on accent prejudice and a guided discussion session. Come along if you have an interest in language, perhaps you speak more than one language or a non-standard dialect or just want to learn more about how speakers might be judged on how they sound.
Participants will learn about what it means to be bilingual and what it means to have an accent. The café is an opportunity to reflect on accent biases, hear from others about their experiences and think of ways to combat such biases and foster inclusivity – at work, school, college, home, in the wider community.
