The art of rhetoric, as it was developed by the ancient Greeks and Romans, offers a valuable life skill: it helps us communicate effectively and think logically about complex issues. Rhetoric can be used to bring others to see different points of view, or to identify whether someone else’s argument is weak or strong.
At this informal café, hosted by Professor Gesine Manuwald (UCL) and Dr Kathryn Tempest (Roehampton), you will begin with an introduction to ancient rhetorical concepts before turning to the core of the experience: an analysis of modern speeches - from Dr Martin Luther King to Winston Churchill and Barack Obama - as participants apply the ancient concepts to develop critical responses to the examples provided.
All members of the general public who are interested in oratory, politics, and history are welcome to join, and school students are particularly encouraged to attend (recommended age: 16+). No prior knowledge is required!
