"Banners of Care" is a hands-on banner making workshop, celebrating the strength of unpaid carers in Gateshead and echoing and exploring North-East England's trade union history. Modelled on the trade unionists of yesteryear, who championed their rights with silk banners, this workshop will bring unpaid caregivers and those interested in care or trade unionism to craft a contemporary banner - a symbol of solidarity and resistance - with our unpaid carers.

This workshop melds art, history, and social activism, empowering carers to share their stories and demand recognition. We will work with Emma Shankland of Durham Bannermakers to use caregivers' experiences, values and ideas to design a banner that will then go on to be produced. The event will include a free lunch. It will also feature short talks from caregivers and on the history of banner-making and trade unionism in the North East.
