This interactive session invites the public to consider their favourite regional words and explore how different definitions sculpt our interpretations of place, society and selfhood through badge making.

Regional words often mean a lot to us over the course of our lives and can shape our communal lives. Looking at how dictionaries define the meaning of a word, what sources they draw on to do this and how this process has changed across time, participants will think about how regional dialect words are not central to this process and how dictionary makers respond to the notion of a standard language and regional variety.

Participants will end the session preparing their own dictionary definition of a word and produce a badge to take away with them.

This event is part of a series of events led by the University of Wolverhampton.
