The image of the witch has often been reappropriated by feminists to symbolise a resistance to the patriarchy. However, many historians, including academic feminists, remain critical of this oversimplification and draw attention instead to the complex phenomenon of the witch-hunts. How and why were alleged witches persecuted across history and cultures? And are populist images of the witch on social media just a play with re-interpretation and self-representation, or do they misrepresent what a look at historical sources and imagery from feminist perspectives might reveal?

Come along to our creative workshop to explore what 'the witch' means to you, listen to some introductory talks about the history of the witch-hunts, the image of the witch and its feminist interpretations, and join the debate around historical accuracy and self-fashioning.

This event is led by History Lab, the national network for postgraduate students in history and relate disciplines.

This is a hybrid event, taking place at Senate House and on Zoom.
