What’s it like growing up as a young women in Essex today? This audio installation is a snapshot of the lives of ten Year 10 students from local high school, Westcliff High School for Girls, exploring their intersectional identities through spoken word poetry.

This family-friendly free event is for anyone interested in how your voice is “marked” by the land in which you were raised. The Essex Girl accent marks girls living in Essex with a regional stereotype that insists she is unintelligent and uncultured. Breaking down this stereotype through a series of 6 pre-festival poetry workshops, these young women challenge you to listen again to these Essex girls: “You may recognize my accent but do you really hear me?”

Their creative work culminates in a 30 minute audio installation celebrating the richly diverse voices, accents and languages in Essex and is housed in East 15 Acting School’s Clifftown Theatre, Southend-on-sea, Essex. Journey with these teens as they discover who they are through the sound of their voice. Maybe you’ll discover something about your voice too?
