Scheduled dates
Leicestershire was traditionally labelled a county of 'spires and squires', for church spires were a landmark feature of the shire. At this event, we will look at the history, landscape, architecture and above all stories behind the church spires of Leicestershire. We will discuss why and how they were such important landmarks, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
The activity will be an illustrated online talk about the history, architecture and landscape position of the landmark spires of Leicestershire. There will be a short overview on the history of spires, then some examples of famous spires, with the stories of their creation, use and reputation over time. There will be some fun quiz polls along the way, culminating in the 'favourite landmark spire of Leicestershire'. There will be questions and discussion at various points during the event, including opportunities to share stories and to discuss the issues of maintaining and restoring spires today.
For everyone with an interest in local history.
