Join designer and researcher Darren Leader with Dr Sophie Butler and Dr Tom Roebuck from UEA for a guided walking tour exploring medieval merchants’ marks in Norwich followed by a hands-on creative workshop with risograph digital printing.

The day begins with a tour of Norwich city centre, to find various medieval trademark locations. The walk begins at the National Cente for Writing and will take approximate 1.5 hours, and is wheelchair accessible.

Returning to The National Centre for Writing, the workshop will see everyone design their own merchants’ mark which will then be turned into a risograph print to take home. The designs will also be displayed in ‘Make Your Mark! Norwich’s Merchants’ Marks Past and Present’, a week long exhibition at Dragon Hall.

In medieval times, Norwich was an international trading centre with merchants’ marks - precursors of modern logos - stamped onto goods and carved into buildings. These forgotten landmarks, many of which are still visible today, were preserved through the efforts of antiquarian John Kirkpatrick (1687-1728) and Mark your Mark! celebrates him as a pioneer of sustainable heritage.

Supported by CreativeUEA in partnership with the National Centre for Writing, Norfolk Library and Information Service and Norfolk Museums Service.

This event is part of the Make Your Mark! event series led by UEA.
