Where do English words come from? How old is the oldest English word? Is English still one language? Discover the answer to these questions and more at this interactive workshop run by expert linguists from UCL.
Whether creating medieval manuscript pages, experimenting with 16th-century recipes, or tracing the voyage of English around the world, discover how English vocabulary has changed in the last millennium, and how it continues to evolve in the present. You will have a unique opportunity to learn about dictionary making at Dr Johnson’s House Museum. There’s a tour through the exhibition on Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language with museum curator Celine Luppo McDaid, and a chance to learn about how words enter the Oxford English Dictionary with World Englishes editor, Danica Salazar.
You will end the session by becoming experts and adding your own words to the workshop’s spectacular word bunting!
This is a closed workshop open to schools only.
