Come along to hear more about rhetorics of resistance in response to imperialist words and actions, focusing on perspectives from Hawai'i and Ireland.
There will be two talks, including performance and multimedia elements:
- Aideen O’Leary will introduce (and dramatically perform) vigorous early-modern Irish resistance pieces by Irish historian Geoffrey Keating and others, in response to English poet Edmund Spenser’s vehement treatment of Gaelic Ireland.
- Avery DeMarco will focus on Hawaiians’ current struggles with colonialism, including clips and excerpts of indigenous people explaining how they and their natural environment are impacted by imperial practices and lack of U.S. military and state aid.
There will be ample time throughout to question, challenge and discuss, accompanied by refreshments.
This event is drop-in with no booking required.
