Please note: unfortunately this event has been cancelled, due to yellow rain warnings and flood warnings in the area.

Humans have always been fascinated by the night sky. If you're interested in finding out more about what we can see in the night sky and what it tells us about life out there as well as life down here on Earth, come along for 'What On Earth Is That?' at Grassholme Observatory.

You'll learn about what can be observed in Durham's Dark Skies with the naked eye and through telescopes, and have the chance to speak with researchers and artists about what it means for us humans today. The event is suitable for adults and older families.

Please wear warm clothing - it can get a bit chilly out there! The autumn weather up North means we can't guarantee a cloudless sky, but unless the weather presents a health and safety risk we'll go ahead as best we can.

'What on Earth Is That?' will also take place at the North Pennines Observatory on 17 November.
